Northwest Denver ยท Neighborhood Guide
Applewood,orchards first, fairways second
Drive west on 32nd past Youngfield and the metro quietly lets go of you. The lots widen to a third of an acre, the trees are sixty years old, and South Table Mountain stands at the end of the street like a set piece. This was Prospect Valley orchard country once. The apples named it.
Read Applewood as the place Denver people land when they want land. It is not a city. Most of it is unincorporated Jefferson County, with pieces claimed by Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Golden, and that jurisdictional patchwork shapes everything from your taxes to your chicken coop rights.
Where it starts and stops
Is Applewood in Golden, Lakewood,or neither?
Mostly neither. The heart of Applewood sits between Youngfield Street and I-70 on the east and South Table Mountain on the west, from Clear Creek on the north down toward the hills above 6th Avenue. Ask three neighbors for the exact lines and you will get three maps.
The mailing addresses say Golden, Wheat Ridge, or Lakewood depending on the street, and a few subdivisions were annexed over the years. The rest answers to Jefferson County alone. Two listings can face each other and pay different taxes to different governments.
three jurisdictions.
Read the plat, not the postmark.
Prospect Valley was orchard and farm country into the postwar years, and the apple trees gave the area its name before the subdivisions arrived in the fifties and sixties: Applewood Knolls, Applewood Mesa, Rolling Hills, and their siblings.
The golf course came in 1961, a J. Press Maxwell design laid along the valley floor under the mesa, and it has anchored the neighborhood's green western edge ever since.
The street
Where do you eat in Applewood, when the neighborhood is all houses?
Youngfield carries the restaurants, Gold's Marketplace covers the east flank, and Golden's scene starts five minutes west. Nobody here is more than a short drive from dinner, and nobody walks to it either.
Fire & Vine
The Abrusci family's urban Italian, in its purpose-built room on Youngfield since the rebrand. Wood-fired pizzas, serious gluten-free range, the neighborhood's default celebration table.
Taste of Denmark
A real Danish bakery, kringle and all, run by bakers who trained in the old tradition. Saturday mornings here feel imported.
Bunker's Taproom at Applewood
The bar and grill at Applewood Golf Course, open to everyone, with patio views up the mesa. The nineteenth hole doubles as the neighborhood clubhouse.
Gold's Marketplace
The reborn 1950s-era grocery at 26th and Kipling, now holding Ester's Neighborhood Pub, Illegal Pete's, and a rotating local cast. The east side's gathering point.
240 Union
The white-tablecloth seafood and grill room that has held its standard since the eighties. Ten minutes south, and still where Applewood goes to close a deal.
Maple Grove Park & Reservoir
Ballfields and a quiet reservoir loop tucked behind the houses, with the mesa as a backdrop. The locals' alternative to Crown Hill crowds.
South Table Mountain
Trailheads off the neighborhood's western edge climb to mesa-top views over the whole metro. Out the door, up the hill, home in ninety minutes.
Applewood is the rare metro Denver neighborhood where the geography does more work than the real estate marketing. You are buying the mesa light, the mature cottonwoods, the golf course green belt, and lot sizes that Denver stopped building seventy years ago. The restaurant scene is thin and that is fine, because Golden and the Highlands are both fifteen minutes away. People who buy here stop commuting to recreation. That is the whole pitch, and it holds.
The houses
Applewood homes for sale, read this before you tour
Fifties and sixties ranches and split-levels dominate, built wide on third-acre lots when builders still assumed a garden. Applewood Knolls and the streets under the mesa hold genuine mid-century designs, some untouched, some taken to the studs. Scattered newer builds fill the old orchard remnants.
Because most of Applewood is unincorporated, rules differ street to street: county zoning here, Wheat Ridge or Lakewood code there, and a handful of covenant-controlled subdivisions with their own opinions. Confirm jurisdiction before you plan an addition, an ADU, or anything with wheels parked outside.
On the houses themselves, test the era: original galvanized plumbing, sixty-year-old sewer lines, and single-pane mid-century glass are common in the unrenovated stock. The lot is the asset. Price the house like the work it needs.
Questions I get
Asked,answered
Is Applewood its own city?
No. Applewood is a named community, not a municipality. Most of it is unincorporated Jefferson County, with sections inside Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Golden city limits. Two houses on the same street can sit under different governments, which changes taxes, permitting, and services. Always check the parcel, not the mailing address.
Why is it called Applewood?
Apple orchards. This was Prospect Valley farm country, and the orchards that covered it gave the postwar subdivisions their name. The builders kept the theme going: Applewood Knolls, Applewood Mesa, Applewood Valley, and so on through the plat maps.
Is the Applewood Golf Course public?
Yes. The J. Press Maxwell course from 1961 is open to the public, par 71, with Bunker's Taproom at the clubhouse. It has been named a best course to walk, and the views toward South Table Mountain explain why tee times go quickly on fall weekends.
What schools serve Applewood?
Jeffco Public Schools across the board, with well-regarded neighborhood elementaries that families name as a reason they came. Assignments vary by street and the choice system adds options, so verify the current boundary for any address you are serious about.
Is Applewood a good investment compared to Denver proper?
Different bet. Denver's northwest neighborhoods trade on walkability and density upside. Applewood trades on scarcity: large lots, mature landscaping, mesa access, and almost no buildable land left. Inventory stays thin because owners stay put. When the right ranch does list, it rarely waits around.

Applewood is the far edge of the Northwest Denver story. Every step east trades land for walkability.

The parcel map,is the listing.
No portal will tell you whether an Applewood address answers to the county, Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, or Golden, what that means for your remodel, or which subdivisions carry covenants with teeth. I pull the plat before I pull the comps. Bring me an address and I will tell you what you are actually buying, dirt first.
